Team-building efforts revitalize teams and provide a nice boost in team innovation and productivity. But then the energy fades and the daily pressures of meeting objectives lulls the team back into their old ways of working together.
We call this a "decay curve" and it's a natural after-effect of any intervention. Why? Because as many days as we — or any teambuilding practitioner — spend working on changing the dynamics of a team, it pales in comparison to the amount of time the team has spent developing the bad habits that lead to the point when a team-building intervention was required. So, does that mean that team-building programs are a waste of time? No, not at all, BUT (yes, there had to be a but), you have to think and plan for how you are going to address the "decay curve" and get the team running at high performance speed again.
