Have you noticed that noise - too much of it or the lack of it - impacts your creative thinking energy? When New & Improved's founders, Bob Eckert and Jonathan Vehar, wrote More Lightning, Less Thunder - How to Energize Innovation Teams they did most of the writing in coffee shops. They say it wasn't so much the caffeine (although some would beg to differ) as it was the energy of the space.
There is some new research about the impact noise can have on creativity. Interestingly enough, the research shows that it is pretty hard to be creative in a quiet place and a loud workplace can be too distracting. But the right mix of calm and commotion, a la a coffee shop, has been proven to get the creative juices flowing.
This research has inspired a small group of folks to bring the sounds of a coffee shop to our desktops. So, the next time you need a creativity jolt and there is no time to drive to the coffee shop or you want to skip the temptation to spend a small fortune on a double espresso, simply visit Coffitivity online and let your creativity percolate.
For the record, I don't do caffeine. So it must have been the noise! -- Jonathan
