This morning Denise mentioned that she sees very few kids over the age of 10 years old wearing bicycle helmets, despite the risks on busy streets. My comment was that they obviously never took a motorcycle safety class or an autoracing class where one learns how critical these "brain buckets" are. Apparently style is more important than safety?
As if anticipating this, my friend Dave Huntley (who creates many of the still and time-lapse images we use in our presentations) just sent a link to a very cool line of Yakkay bicycle helmets available in the E.U. The basic concept relates to one of the "Checklist Questions" that we teach about as a fundamental tool for creating new ideas. The checklist of questions to ask when you need new ideas has the acronym SCAMPER, which is the reminder to ask what might you:
Substitute
Combine
Adapt
Modify/Magnify/Minimize
Put to other uses
Eliminate
Reverse/rearrange
The Yakkay helmet system takes that second principle, "Combine" and puts it to good use. Take a basic helmet, and add several coverings that you can put on top of the helmet that look like stylish hats! Everything from baseball caps to flowered slouch hats to pith helmets (I'm told Bob is ordering a white "Luzern" model"). They're a nice combination to make something very functional much more stylish. And perhaps more likely to be worn?
I may get one just so I can use the accessory ear-flaps during the cold Chicago winters when I'm commuting by bike to the office. And I always use my helmet for safety and to provide a good example to the neighborhood children. Do you?
I always go with the class using a school bus, car or uncles. I am very scared the accident every day. Thank you for sharing.

I had been searching on yahoo for sites regarding fitness and cycling when this posting showed up in the final results. While not really what I was looking for it was really worth a study and for that I could give it four stars.
